La Citadelle
near Ste Foy-La-Grande, Bordeaux, and Bergerac
renting our holiday home in the Dordogne
News: February 2002It will take some time to set out 2001's happenings. Apart from writing them, we have about 100 new pictures to add to the site, and have made a start with a whole page of views of our lake. Click here to see what our visitors have written about La Citadelle.
We had to make an emergency trip to La Citadelle in January to sort out the aftermath of unprecented low temperatures - minus 20 degrees Centigrade! Three burst radiators, unfortunately, so we shall not be able to take any bookings until after June when they are being replaced.
Apologies to anyone who has emailed lacitadelle over the past couple of months. One of the "features" of Yahoo/Geocities email means that it went astray, until recently when I found the problem.La Citadelle is a former farm near Ste Foy-La-Grande and Bergerac, in the Dordogne in south-west France. The main farmhouse sleeps 8+, and is set in 3 acres of garden, surrounded by 25 acres of woods which we own. The house overlooks our lake, which is ideal for swimming, fishing, and boating. The stunning position is totally secluded but not isolated. There are panoramic views across lake, garden and fields to our woods in all directions. It is well-positioned for access by ordinary road, motorway, and Motorail, and Bordeaux's excellent international airport is only 45 miles away. Golf locally is excellent.
We let the farmhouse, principally from May to October, but it is available fully heated for longer stays outside this season. It has beds for up to eight adults in four good-sized double or twin bed-rooms, and it has another large bedroom on the ground floor which we have furnished as a nursery, but which can hold another child or two if you arrange it at the time of booking, or which, also by arrangement, we can furnish for a disabled guest.

The modern fitted kitchen includes
electric cooker, microwave, washing machine, and a range of small
appliances. It also has a table and seating for 8, although we usually eat
at the picnic tables on the lawn, overlooking the lake; these tables are
shaded by giant catalpa (Indian bean) trees which carry great swags of
fragrant blossom during June and July.
The large sitting-room has three sofas plus additional seating, as well as a television and very well-stocked bookcase. It has two pairs of glazed doors opening out onto a terrace and lawn shaded by a huge Constantinople Mimosa (albrizzia) tree which is covered by purple blossom all summer. The house is comfortably furnished and equipped for eight, plus a baby; we make a small charge to go towards the cost of additional equipment and cleaning if you book it for more visitors than this. All fuel and water bills and bed linen are included in the charge. From summer 2001 we have included personal towels as well as a set of swimming towels, to make baggage more manageable. Please note that there is no phone in the house so you may wish to bring your mobile with you.All the floors are polished wood or tiles, and all the windows have shutters. The aspect is very light and airy, with large windows and glazed double doors all the way round. The doors all lead straight out onto small terraces and the surrounding lawns. We are not able to accept pets. Availability and price for the property (not per person) per week for 2001 is shown below. Note that bookings tend to be heavy in the middle of the summer, and we are unlikely to accept one-week bookings at that time. Telephone or email to check exact availability and to make a provisional booking. We will then send (or email) you a booking form for you to complete and return to us with a deposit of 25% within a few days to secure your booking. Bookings run from 4 pm on Saturday to 10 am on Saturday.
----WEEK----|-£Sterling-|-Booked?-
---------------------------------- updated 31 March, 2002 For the winter months, La
Citadelle Payment is accepted in sterling drawn on a UK bank, by agreement in French Francs or Euros drawn on a French bank, or by draft or electronic transfer in pounds sterling or Euros with transfer and exchange charges paid by the sender. Early Autumn is warm enough for swimming and a lovely time of year, and the central heating meant that there are usually people there over New Year (and were there through the big storm which ended the old millennium in France). We do have a paper brochure, but we have far more pictures and details on the Web. Follow the link below to find out all about La Citadelle and the Dordogne. Use your BACK button, or the "enquire" link on the index, if you want to get back here. We can also email you a copy of the brochure now, if you drop us a line: send mail.
